New Team!

I’m extremely excited with my new contract. In 2017 I’ll be coaching the U13s NPL team at Olympic. I did have conversations with other clubs but not only I love the atmosphere and the great player pool we have at Olympic, but it’s also way more practical to me, as I live a 15 min drive from the club.

The good thing about living close to the club is that you can just rock up whenever you feel like. You don’t go just to work. You can go to watch other teams play, to do admin work, to prepare sessions, to just talk to people, anything. I think it’s a big part of the job to not only coach a team, but to live, feel and breathe the club and its people.

Plus it’s a very traditional club in Brisbane and the expectations are high. There’s pressure from everyone, from board, to managers, to players and parents. And coaches must be able to handle pressure. So I’m looking forward to it.

From now on my team has 100% priority in my professional life. I’ll be thinking about it 24\7. All I want is to help my players. I’ll do anything for them, even though I don’t know who they are. Trials will happen in 5 days. The team struggled in the last season, having a 8-5-11 run with a 57-77 goal record. It will certainly be challenging.

The first step for me, before the trials arrive, is to watch videos of the Senior Team playing. The coach of the first team wants all NPL teams to play and train the same way as the Seniors, the way Barcelona and Ajax do. So I need to know how they play and think of the players I want to have in my squad.

We will probably retain at least half the squad from 2016s season, but there will definitely be new players coming in. I still need to talk to two or three people that know the team well to know its strengths and weaknesses.

It might be challenging to talk about my job without revealing information about the club or the team itself, as it is highly unprofessional, but I’ll do my best.

I can’t wait!
